Istanbul straddles two continents and the Bosphorus is the connection, not the obstacle — a ferry crossing is the cheapest good experience in the city and the best orientation you can get on day one.

The Sultanahmet monuments — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the Basilica Cistern — are within a few hundred metres of each other, which makes the historic peninsula a single, dense day rather than three.
