Bali is an island, not a city, and that changes everything about planning. Where you sleep determines what you can realistically do: Ubud puts you next to rice terraces and temples, the southern beaches put you next to the water and the airport.

Almost every worthwhile experience here involves a driver and a road, and Bali's roads are slow. A single 'day trip' can absorb eight hours. Two or three of them across a week is enough.
