The official ferry is the way onto Liberty Island, and Ellis Island — included on the same ticket — is the part most visitors underrate. We prefer the combined ferry over the many harbour cruises because it lands you on both islands instead of circling them.

Security screening at Battery Park, then the ferry across the harbour with skyline views on the return leg.
